West Point Thoroughbreds, 3C Stables, and Robert Masiello’s filly Berned takes on eight juveniles in the $300,000 Starlet Stakes (G1) on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

The Bernardini filly finished second in her debut over the summer at Saratoga before breaking her maiden going a flat mile on September 10 at Belmont Park. If her first start against winners, she just missed in the $200,000 Tempted Stakes (G2) on November 5 at Aqueduct. Winner of the Tempted, Miss Sky Warrior, came back to win the Demoiselle Stakes (G2).

Trained by Tom Albertrani, Berned will be piloted by Norberto Arroyo, Jr., who is fresh off a riding title at Del Mar. Post time for the Starlet is 3:58 PT.

“After she broke her maiden we thought a lot about running in a Breeders’ Cup prep,” said West Point president Terry Finley. “However, Tom (Albertrani) felt she was a little quiet in late September/early October so we didn’t force the issue and waited for the Tempted. She’s one of the best-bred fillies to ever race under the black and gold and we know how precious grade one wins and placings are. She ran really well in the Tempted and the timing of this race is very good.”

Berned jogging at Los Alamitos on Friday morning. She flew from Newark to Los Angeles aboard a FedEx plane on Tuesday and is stabled in Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer’s barn.
