Carson’s Run Answers Again in Jockey Club Derby / Saturday, October 5, 2024

A wondrous ride with Carson’s Run continued on Saturday with a stirring rally to victory in the $500,000 Jockey Club Derby (G3) at Belmont at the Big A.

The 3-year-old colt prevailed as the favorite under jockey Dylan Davis and trainer Christophe Clement, providing West Point Thoroughbreds with its 20th stakes victory of 2024. Carson’s Run has accounted for three of those, the Jockey Club Derby coming after wins in the Tale of the Cat Stakes at Monmouth Park and the Saratoga Derby (G1) this season, not to mention a Grade 1 triumph as a 2-year-old in the Summer Stakes at Woodbine.

Beyond the numbers, Carson’s Run has manifested a dream centered on his namesake Carson Jost, who was born with the extremely rare genetic disorder, Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. Resulting from a partial deletion on the short arm of chromosome 4, the syndrome causes severe mental and physical disabilities. He is confined to a wheelchair and is largely unable to communicate.

Carson’s father, Wade, is a former West Point classmate of WPT CEO Terry Finley. Wade decided to become part of a West Point Thoroughbreds partnership in 2023 with the hope of honoring his beloved son Carson, and Terry agreed to name this chestnut son of Cupid after him.
