After blinkers made a noticeable difference in morning work, Chestertown will race with them Thursday afternoon with Kentucky Derby points on the line in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on opening day at Saratoga. Modernist is the only graded stakes winner in the field of nine.
Chestertown is coming off a career-best 9 3/4 on the Ragozin Sheets last time despite ducking out at the top of the stretch. Errant stretch drives in his last two races cemented the decision to add blinkers, ala some of Tapit’s best offspring including Frosted, Creator, Tonalist and Hansen.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Chestertown worked a strong five furlongs in 1:01 on July 5 at Belmont and followed that up with a three-furlong drill over the main track at Saratoga on July 12.
