Counting Stars on the Oaks Trail After Running Away With Year’s End / Saturday, December 27, 2025

Super Corredora is on the Kentucky Oaks trail by virtue of her triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and she may have some company from fellow West Point Thoroughbreds contender Counting Stars, who passed her first two-turn test with flying colors on December 27 at Oaklawn Park in the $150,000 Year’s End Stakes.

Counting Stars and jockey Francisco Arrieta doubled up just 13 days after winning the Astral Spa Stakes at Oaklawn for trainer Mark Casse, who was game to squeeze in one more race in the filly’s 2-year-old season.

Stretching out from six furlongs to a mile, Counting Stars was sharp and overcame a wide trip in the Year’s End, taking command in the far turn and steadily drawing away in the lane for a powerful 6-length score.

Arrieta said, “Because she’s been running short, I thought she was going to be more forward. I was a little bit worried about it. We had more speed in the race [than in the Astral Spa]. But, luckily, I was outside and she relaxed. She started pulling early. I let her go a little bit, going easy, and she did it all. She finished strong.”

Casse will point Counting Stars to an official Kentucky Oaks prep in the $300,000 Martha Washington Stakes run at a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt on Saturday, January 31 at Oaklawn.

Casse said, “She was wide, which you never want to be, but she was on her game today. Hopefully coming back and getting a route race under her, she may settle a little. If she’s going to beat good horses down the road, if she’s going to be a tip-top horse, she’s going to have to learn to settle a little. But that should come with some racing.”
