Delayed by six days due to the winter storm that blasted much of the U.S., Counting Stars will go for a third straight stakes win at Oaklawn on February 6 in the $300,000 Martha Washington for 3-year-old fillies. This time she will be on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks: with 20-10-6-4-2 in qualifying points at stake for the big race on the first Friday in May.
Counting Stars and jockey Francisco Arrieta won back-to-back stakes in short order in December, scoring in the Astral Spa on December 14 by 4 lengths and the Year’s End on December 27 by 6 lengths.
Trained by Mark Casse, Counting Stars is 5-to-2 on the morning line for the Martha Washington.
This Saturday, Pony Express is 9-to-5 on the morning line for the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita.
Pony Express won by 6 lengths over this track last June and finished second by three-quarters of a length in the Tokyo City Stakes on October 25 in his most recent start.
Hector Berrios will guide him on Saturday for trainer John Sadler. West Point races the son of Gun Runner with By Talla Racing and Three Chimneys Racing.
