County Final came through for a sharp victory Wednesday at Churchill Downs in his first dirt outing in about a year.
Dashing five furlongs on the main track, the gray gelding took command turning for home, turned back a stretch challenge and drove away to win by a length in the $162,000 open allowance for 3-year-olds. Red-hot jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. guided him for trainer Steve Asmussen.
County Final has been versatile throughout his career, winning the off-the-turf Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park at 2 and returning as a 3-year-old to finish second by a head in the Greenwood Stakes on turf at Woodbine. In October, he rallied to finish third against older horses in the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland.
The sale-topper in the Fasig-Tipton horses of racing age sale in July 2020, County Final races for West Point, Bill Sandbrook and Anna Shannon.
