Double at Keeneland on Friday / Friday, April 19, 2024

Cagliostro and Northern Invader delivered a double at Keeneland on Friday for jockey Jose Ortiz, trainer Cherie DeVaux and co-owners including West Point Thoroughbreds. Each were acquired at OBS 2-year-old sales in the spring of 2022.

As 4-year-olds on Friday, they both stepped up to gain their first wins of the year after distinguishing themselves in stakes competition in 2023. They also both overcame far outside post positions.

Cagliostro came first on Friday with a game performance off the bench on the main track, holding on to prevail by a neck and succeed with the addition of blinkers.

Graded stakes-placed in the Indiana Derby and Smarty Jones Stakes as a 3-year-old, Cagliostro is a Florida-bred son of Upstart just like the 2-year-old colt out of Heaven Knows Best that West Point added last week at OBS April. DeVaux will train that newcomer as well.

Northern Invader and Ortiz were aggressive from post 10 in the nightcap on the turf, taking command out front and the white-faced chestnut responded in spades when called on for his best at the top of the lane, opening up to win by more than 2 lengths.

Bred in Ontario, Northern Invader was a stakes winner at Belmont Park in 2023.

West Point also scored a turf allowance win on Sunday, April 14 at Keeneland with Ohana Honor.
