Curlin Filly

    • Heading to Hall of Famer Bill Mott

    • Same cross produced BC Classic Champ Vino Rosso

    • Curlin #2 sire of 2023

Searching for a well-bred filly as the Keeneland September stretched into a second week, West Point Thoroughbreds uncovered a gem in this Curlin filly, a dead ringer for her sire and hailing from a top breeding program that is going through a disperal process following the death of its founder.

Curlin needs no introduction, with his status entrenched as one of best stallions in the world, now reaching folklore status as in 2022 he became the first sire in history with three Eclipse champions in the same year, and promptly repeated that feat in 2023. He also doubled up with the most expensive yearling in 2023 ($4-million) and again in 2024 with the $5-million headliner earlier in Keeneland September.

The new filly isn’t quite that flashy as her dam never won a stakes event (although she was Grade 2-placed), and she is still on the immature side physically. As our bloodstock agent David Ingordo likes to say in these cases akin to a puppy with big paws, “Her future is in front of her.” Fortunately there is so much foundation to build on.

She comes from a breeding program that WebMD CEO Marty Wygod cultivated over 40 years with great success. Wygod died this past April, just a few days after homebred Resilience scored the Grade 2 Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct to stamp his ticket to the Kentucky Derby for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Wygod and Mott had teamed up together for more than two decades but never reached the Kentucky Derby before. A few weeks after Mr. Wygod’s passing, Resilience ran very well in the Run for the Roses, finishing sixth.

Wygod did have a stamp on the Kentucky Derby through his homebred Yankee Gentleman, who went on to be the broodmare sire of Triple Crown hero American Pharoah. Mott trained Yankee Gentleman on the racetrack.

Bill Mott will continue that legacy as the trainer of the new filly, and he also has deep ties with Curlin, having trained two of those repeat Eclipse and Breeders’ Cup champions from 2022 and ’23 in Cody’s Wish and Elite Power.

Price includes all acquisition costs and all training, veterinary, and insurance expenses until January 1, 2026.
