Jace’s Road will be West Point’s sixth Kentucky Derby runner in the last nine years when he breaks from gate 12 in the full field of 20 on Saturday in America’s biggest race.
A yearling purchase in 2021 with co-owner Albaugh Family Stable, Jace’s Road has turned in a series of aggressive gallops on track at Churchill this week, following a final serious tuneup last Saturday in company with Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Angel of Empire.
Florent Geroux has the call on Jace’s Road. Florent guided the son of Quality Road to a 6-length stakes win in the Gun Runner at Fair Grounds in New Orleans on December 26. Jace’s Road’s last outing was a third-place finish in the Louisiana Derby (G2).
West Point finished second in the 2014 Kentucky Derby with Commanding Curve, who had run third in the Louisiana Derby. WPT achieved Kentucky Derby glory in 2017 with Always Dreaming and has been back to the big race in 2018, 2020 and 2021.
