Terry Finley and bloodstock agent David Ingordo consider Jaxon Traveler to be a bright spot from the dark early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. That is when they were able to latch onto the Maryland-bred son of Munnings at the OBS spring sale of two-year-olds in training for a final bid of $140,000. On Saturday, 7-year-old Jaxon Traveler will carry four straight wins into the $250,000 Whitmore Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park.
Jaxon Traveler prevailed in last year’s Whitmore by a nose for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. He got up by a neck for his 10th career stakes win last time out in the Ft. Bliss Stakes at Sunland Park on January 17, becoming a stakes winner for the sixth straight season.
The Whitmore will be another showdown with Tejano Twist, who won this race in 2023, fell a nose short in 2024, and came back to win the King Cotton Stakes at Oaklawn on January 26. Keith Asmussen, Steve’s son, has the mount on Jaxon Traveler for the first time.
West Point and David Ingordo have been busy recruiting new 2-year-olds at OBS March this week, mining for gold again.
