Magnolia Midnight Mows Them Down at Colonial / Friday, August 20, 2021

Magnolia Midnight put on a show Tuesday at Colonial Downs in Virginia, breaking much better in his second career start, taking command turning for home and driving away to win by 7 1/4 lengths (video). He will be considered for the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes on September 18 at Churchill Downs. The $300,000 Iroquois is a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and is the first prep race on the points schedule for the 2022 Kentucky Derby.

The 2yo son of freshman sire Midnight Storm had finished fourth after a tardy break last month in a grass sprint at Colonial in his debut. Overnight rain washed Tuesday’s race off the turf and onto the main track, which was rated fast by post time.

“At the quarter pole, I just shook the reins and he turned it on, and there was plenty left in the tank,” said jockey Colby Hernandez.

“He broke out of there a lot sharper this time,” said trainer Dallas Stewart. “Everything worked out and now we know he handles the dirt too. I’m excited to run him at Churchill.”

West Point and Partners bought Magnolia Midnight at the OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training.
