O Besos Picks Up Kentucky Derby Points / Friday, February 19, 2021

Not quite a bullseye but O Besos did fire a strong shot in Saturday’s Risen Star Stakes, nosing out 5-to-2 Senor Buscador for fourth place behind the same top three who ran 1-2-3 in the Lecomte Stakes a month earlier at Fair Grounds.

O Besos had never raced beyond six furlongs prior to the mile-and-an-eighth Risen Star. He earned five points toward the Kentucky Derby and occupies the 21st spot in the Derby standings

Jockey Marcelino Pedroza Jr. said, “Just wait til next time, he’s going to be a lot better.”

Trainer Greg Foley’s son and assistant, Travis, said “He ran hard and it was a tough ask, so have to be pleased with the effort, picking up some points, and knowing that he should improve off this.

Partner Joe Ingram won our Risen Star Handicapping contest by picking 5 of 6 stakes winners, including $89 winner Captivating Moon. Nine entrants had Captivating Moon, impressive handicapping!

West Point also has King’s Ovation (runner-up in the Grade 3 Swale Stakes) in line for a Kentucky Derby prep, while Lady Ovation (who ran second in the Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes), will look to add to her 4 qualifying points for the Kentucky Oaks.
