Kentucky Downs, nestled in the rolling hills of Franklin, Kentucky, is not your average racetrack. With its unique European-style turf course and rich history, this iconic venue offers a racing experience unlike any other in the United States. Known for its short yet intense racing meet, Kentucky Downs has become a favorite among bettors and horsemen alike, offering some of the richest purses in the sport. Whether you’re a seasoned racing enthusiast or a curious newcomer, a visit to Kentucky Downs promises a blend of thrilling races, Southern hospitality, and an atmosphere steeped in equine tradition.
Kentucky Downs is home to America’s only European-style (all turf) racecourse, and at one mile and five-sixteenths in length, it is one of the longest tracks in the nation. Unlike other racetracks, which are typically oval, the course at Kentucky Downs is kidney-shaped, featuring undulation and a unique right-hand bend.
For those planning to come to Kentucky Downs in September for the races, here are some tips/recommendations:
- The best airport to fly into is Nashville. It’s about an hour’s drive, just down I-65. You can see the track from the interstate.
- The Louisville Airport is 2 hours away.
- There are a few hotels in Franklin, Kentucky. If you w;.ant to make a weekend of it, you can also stay in Bowling Green, about 20 minutes away, or Nashville.
- Dress: Casual compared to most other tracks when running in a stake. No need to wear a suit or your best dress. Ladies casual dress is fine, guys khakis and short-sleeved polo.
- Keeneland September Sale starts September 9. It’s about a 2.5-hour drive (and a time change) from Kentucky Downs Downs to Keeneland.
- Things To Do:
- Visit the Corvette Museum and Lost River Cave in Bowling Green. Bowling Green is also the home of Western Kentucky University.
- Check out Dueling Grounds Distillery right in Franklin.
- Nashville: I highly recommend Belle Meade Plantation for horse lovers—it’s a super interesting historical site. A visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and a stroll downtown are also must-dos.
- Head up 65 about an hour to Mammoth Cave National Park.
- Head to the Mint Gaming Hall — located right at Kentucky Downs, this entertainment venue offers gaming, live music, and dining, perfect for an evening out after the races.
- Restaurants:
- Franklin, KY, is a pretty small town. The best restaurant there is Brickyard Cafe, about 10 minutes from the track. Near the track, there are mostly chain restaurants.
- Nashville has tons of good restaurants—my favorites are Trattoria Mulino and Bakersfield.
- Bowling Green has some good spots too: I recommend The Bistro, Montana Grill, Hickory and Oak, and Tony’s of Bowling Green. There are also many restaurants on Scottsville Road, just off the Interstate.
