Run Away Rojo Strikes in Hoosier Breeders Stakes / Wednesday, June 21, 2023

Run Away Rojo took command going into the far turn and held on for a stakes triumph and a measure of vengeance by edging King Ice in Wednesday’s $100,000 Hoosier Breeders Sophomore Handicap at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Last September in their previous matchup, the late-charging King Ice ran down Run Away Rojo to win a maiden special weight by a head at the Indiana track.

Reylu Gutierrez piloted Run Away Rojo for the first time Wednesday but he did his homework.

“I had the jump and the agility and getting away from [King Ice] early was the key,” Reylu said. “Last year Run Away Rojo lost to the same horse because they went slow out front and that horse was too close and able to run him down. Today I wanted to quicken up the tempo to not let him be so close to us.”

Dallas Stewart trains Run Away Rojo, a 3-year-old gelding who was acquired for $120,000 from Mayberry Farm’s consignment at the 2022 OBS April sale of two-year-olds in training. He could make his next start in the $250,000 Governors Stakes for Indiana-bred 3-year-olds on August 2.
