Sandman Returns in Heady Company in Jim Dandy / Monday, July 21, 2025

West Point Thoroughbreds has an exciting showdown on tap Saturday, as Sandman takes on Sovereignty in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga — a key prep for the Travers Stakes.

Sandman has been freshened up since his third-place finish in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. He will add blinkers with jockey Jose Ortiz retaining the mount in a field of five. Jose has been in peak form coming off his titles at Fair Grounds and Churchill, winning at a 25 percent clip through the first two weeks at Saratoga.

Mark Casse said, “He’s doing well and it was good to see Journalism win and Gosger run well in the Haskell. Obviously, Sovereignty is going to be tough to beat, but we are going to give it a try.

“I’m hoping the blinkers don’t take some of his punch away, but you never know until you try,” Casse said. “We are looking for a good effort in the Jim Dandy, something to propel us to the Travers.”

The race will live on the Fox network channel in a broadcast that runs from 3 to 6 ET.
