Sandman is 4-to-1 on the morning line for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes, one of five stakes challengers for West Point Thoroughbreds this weekend at the big event at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Seventh on a sloppy track in the Kentucky Derby, Sandman will have Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard for the first time in the Preakness. The colt arrived to the Baltimore track early Tuesday and drew post position seven in a field of nine.
Sandman will be trainer Mark Casse’s first Preakness starter since he won the classic in 2019 with War of Will. Like Sandman, War of Will finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby.
Earlier on the card, Signator is signed on for the Grade 3 Dinner Party Stakes on the turf but he is uncertain to run, depending on course conditions at Pimlico. Signator captured the Henry S. Clark Stakes at Laurel last time out.
Three-year-old sprinters will be in action with Mila Rose in the Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) on Friday and Keep It Easy in the Chick Lang Stakes on Saturday.
Mila Rose is unbeaten in two starts for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Jose Ortiz has the call.
Keep It Easy will carry trainer Dale Romans’ impressive Pimlico record into the Chick Lang. Dale owns a victory and three seconds in the Preakness and has won the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) twice as well as the Dixie Stakes (G2) and the Pimlico Distaff (G3).
On the turf, 3-year-old Reagan’s Wit is the 5-to-2 morning-line favorite for the James W. Murphy Stakes on Saturday with Jose Ortiz up for trainer Cherie DeVaux.
