Champion filly Super Corredora makes her second start of the year on Sunday in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita, looking to jump-start her contention for the Kentucky Oaks. She is listed as the even-money favorite.
Super Corredora scored her maiden win over this track last fall, a few weeks before her triumph at Del Mar in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. She owns 34 qualifying points for the Kentucky Oaks and 50-25-15-10-5 will be up for grabs in the Santa Ysabel.
The daughter of Gun Runner was subpar in her return to action on February 8, finishing fourth in the Las Virgenes Stakes.
She has bounced back well, hitting every mark to trainer John Sadler’s eyes in her training over the last few weeks.
“She wasn’t happy in her first race,” John said to Daily Racing Form. “She got hot, and she came out [of the race] and her blood was a little weird. You can say that was a really good field and they just beat her, but some of it was her beating herself.”
The Sadler barn will also have a Graded stakes chance for West Point on Saturday with Final Boss in the $200,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes at Santa Anita.
Final Boss scored two wins last year and will be making his first start since September. He stayed in the barn during that time in a bit of a working vacation, freshening up for a 5-year-old season. Top pilot Juan Hernandez retains the mount on Big Cap day at the Great Race Place. Santa Anita preview
