Two New Winners on Memorial Day / Friday, June 2, 2023

Speakinofthedevil and Royal Velvet delivered a holiday double on Monday, both breaking their maiden in style in Memorial Day action.

Speakinofthedevil sped to the front and drew off to win by 11 3/4 lengths at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Marcelino Pedroza Jr. guided the 3-year-old gelding for trainer Steve Asmussen. A son of Daredevil, Speakinofthedevil was acquired at the OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Royal Velvet, also 3, rallied through the stretch to prevail in his first start of 2023, negotiating a mile on the turf at Pimlico with jockey Victor Carrasco. Trainer Christophe Clement made moved quickly to seize on this opportunity for Royal Velvet once a similar spot in New York failed to materialize. The son of Collected was a yearling purchase in the summer of 2021.

A few races later, Bourbon Ready also took to the grass at Pimlico with a strong performance underneath Carrasco, finishing second by a nose for trainer Arnaud Delacour.
