Vahva came through for a huge win on the big stage at Churchill Downs on the First Saturday in May, storming to victory in the $1-million Derby City Distaff (G1).
The 4-year-old Gun Runner filly improved to 3-for-3 at the Louisville track and turned the tables in a budding rivalry with runner-up Alva Starr. A month ago, Vahva came up a half-length short in her first start of the year in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland.
Trainer Cherie DeVaux has been resolute in her faith in Vahva’s quality, dating back to when she was acquired at the Keeneland September yearling sale. Irad Ortiz Jr. also was very complimentary after riding Vahva for the first time in the Madison Stakes and he was eager to ride her again on Saturday.
Alva Starr took command coming into the stretch but Vahva ran her down and then some, kicking away to win by 2 lengths as the 1.72-to-1 favorite.
“The last time I rode her, I didn’t know her very well and it wasn’t one of my best rides,” Irad said, “Today, I was able to sit a perfect trip and turning for home she really finished strong for me.”
Cherie said, “That was an unbelievable performance, to win a Grade One on this type of stage is so special. It’s really hard to describe. I’m just so happy with everyone involved with this horse and our team.”
Vahva won the Charles Town Oaks (G3) in West Virginia and Raven Run Stakes (G2) at Keeneland last year after focusing on one-turn targets. Her long-term goals in 2024 are the Ballerina Stakes (G1) at Saratoga and the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) at Del Mar.
