West Point at Kentucky Derby 149 / Friday, May 12, 2023

A couple hundred Partners of West Point Thoroughbreds were on hand for the 149th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs last weekend.

The week’s events for Partners included a backstretch visit, a tour of Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky with an up-close look at Flightline, and a cocktail party leading up to the big race days on Friday and Saturday.

The marquee event was a disappointment as Jace’s Road couldn’t make the lead and faded early in the the Kentucky Derby, finishing 17th. Jockey Florent Geroux took care of him through the stretch.

Trainer Brad Cox looked Jace’s Road over closely in the days after the race and noticed that he wasn’t moving as smoothly as usual. A veterinary exam showed no fractures or other serious concerns, just that he would benefit from a 60-day vacation at the farm.

West Point made it to the winner’s circle on Kentucky Oaks Day with Vahva, who delivered a gritty victory underneath jockey Luis Saez for trainer Cherie DeVaux that will likely lead the 3-year-old Gun Runner filly to stakes assignments this summer at Saratoga.
