Champion Super Corredora returns to action Sunday in the Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita Park, launching her sophomore season after a brief freshening. The daughter of Gun Runner earned championship honors with a front-running victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Del Mar, stamping herself as the leader of her division heading into 2026.
The Las Virgenes is compact in size with a field of 4, but it packs quality, highlighted by a familiar rival in Explora, who finished second to Super Corredora in the Breeders’ Cup. Explora enters off an eye-catching win in the Santa Ynez Stakes, giving the race an immediate rematch feel and setting the stage for an early-season measuring stick among the division’s elite. With Kentucky Oaks points on the line, there’s plenty at stake despite the small field.
Super Corredora has given every indication she’s ready for her return. Regular rider Hector Berrios has been aboard for several workouts this winter, and the filly has not missed a beat.
Trainer John Sadler said, “I think we got the perfect post (4 of 4). We will have options. We’ve been training her with that kind of situation in mind and I think she can handle it, sitting off a speed horse.”
The Las Virgenes offers 20-10-6-4 in qualifying points for the Kentucky Oaks. Super Corredora owns 30 points from the Breeders’ Cup.
West Point campaigns Super Corredora in partnership with Spartan Equine Racing, Robert C. Gardiner, and Michael Olszewski.
