Counting Stars wrapped up a tremendous winter and early spring at Oaklawn Park by turning in a major work Sunday in preparation for the $1.5-million Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 1 at Churchill Downs. She will ship to Louisville this week.

The white-faced filly drilled a solo half-mile in 48.20 underneath jockey Francisco Arrieta. Francisco has guided her to three stakes wins at Oaklawn since early December, culminating in a 5 3/4-length triumph in the Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes.

On Sunday, Counting Stars galloped out five furlongs in 1:01 and six furlongs in 1:15.20.

“Counting Stars continues to hold her form,” trainer Mark Casse told Daily Racing Form. “[Arrieta] said she [worked] as good as ever.”

Speaking with Horse Racing Nation, Casse said: “I think she comes into the Oaks with the highest last Beyer (92) of anybody, so she’s going to be tough. She broke her maiden at Churchill Downs, so we know she likes that.”

Counting Stars will be shipping back to Churchill with the Oaks in sight exactly 1 year after West Point acquired her for $150,000 at the OBS spring sale of two-year-olds in training.

Bloodstock agent David Ingordo and the WPT team will be searching for diamonds like her this week at OBS.
