As the holidays approach West Point Thoroughbreds can reflect on a wonderful racing season on a number of fronts, including far and away the stable’s highest-ever win total, and yet there is still quite a bit left on the schedule including seven stakes assignments before the end of the year.
West Point has won 84 races in 2023, up from 49 in 2022, and far ahead of the stable’s previous record total of 64 in 2007. Among the highlights this year have been 12 stakes triumphs, with the likes of undefeated Integration (Grade 2 Hill Prince and Grade 3 Virginia Derby) and Vahva (Grade 2 Raven Run and Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks) leading the charge.
The business still at hand will be mostly centered around Fair Grounds in New Orleans, Aqueduct in New York City, Gulfstream Park in South Florida, and Santa Anita Park, which kicks off its signature racemeet right after Christmas.
Entries will come this weekend for a big Saturday card on December 23 at Fair Grounds. Brigadier General (Tenacious Stakes) and Legalize (Sugar Bowl Stakes) will both step up in class off of their recent impressive wins. Also on December 23, Ohana Honor will tackle the Tropical Park Derby for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park as he exits a second-place finish to fellow West Point runner Northern Invader in the Gio Ponti Stakes in New York York.
On December 30, Northern Invader will squeeze in one more opportunity in the 3yo turf division in the Woodchopper Stakes at Fair Grounds. Along those same lines on the West Coast, Final Boss (Eddie Logan Stakes) and Mocha Grande (Blue Norther Stakes) will close out their 2yo seasons December 29 on the grass at Santa Anita.
