Northern Invader, Cugino Go For Gold on the Churchill Green / Friday, May 31, 2024

West Point Thoroughbreds notched its third stakes win of the Churchill Downs spring meet last weekend and will shoot for more on Saturday with a pair of talented turf runners.

Stakes-winning 4-year-old Northern Invader will bid for his first Graded stakes triumph in the $275,000 Arlington Stakes (G3). Jose Ortiz will be back aboard after guiding the white-faced chestnut to an allowance victory last time out at Keeneland. Cherie DeVaux trains Northern Invader for West Point and Cherie’s husband, David Ingordo.

Later on the card, Cugino is the 7-to-2 morning-line favorite for the $275,000 Audubon Stakes for 3-year-olds. Eclipse champion Irad Ortiz Jr. will take the reins on Cugino for the first time. A son of Twirling Candy, Cugino finished second by a nose in the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes on April 5 at Keeneland. Shug McGaughey trains.

West Point has been to the winner’s circle at Churchill this meet with O Besos (St. Matthews Stakes), Vahva (Grade 1 Derby City Distaff) and Atomic Blonde (Keertana Stakes).
