Two super exciting West Point 3-year-olds go postward in graded stakes on Saturday afternoon. They are amongst 10 West Point sophomores nominated to the 2018 Triple Crown.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) runner-up Untamed Domain makes his seasonal bow in the $100,000 Dania Beach Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park and figures to be the heavy favorite. We’re using this race as a springboard to a Kentucky Derby prep races.

The son of Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom broke his maiden in July at Saratoga before finishing third in the With Anticipation Stakes (G2) and then earning an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup with a win in the Summer Stakes (G2) at Woodbine.

One Derby prep, the Holy Bull Stakes (G2), was under strong consideration for the colt, but the West Point team and Motion opted to stick with the grass for his first start of the year.

“We talked about it pretty extensively,” says West Point president Terry Finley. “However he runs, coming off the layoff, we’re hoping we can quantify the effort. Running on grass eliminates one variable in the sense we already know he runs well on the turf.”

Untamed Domain’s Partners, the self-proclaimed “Domainiacs” will be out in full force this weekend to cheer on their special colt. Post time for the Dania Beach is 5:16 ET. Untamed Domain breaks from post six under Eclipse Award-winning jockey Jose Ortiz.

Turf work over the weekend at Palm Meadows:

Just 14 minutes after Untamed Domain runs, Jerry Hollendorfer trainee Shivermetimbers tries to gain more Kentucky Derby qualifying points in the $150,000 Robert Lewis Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita.

The son of Shanghai Bobby figures to be one of the favorites, having posted 80+ Beyers in all four of his starts. He was most recently fourth in the Sham Stakes (G3) in early January.

His main competition is Peace, a Richard Mandella trainee who broke his maiden professionally last time out. However, Shivemetimbers prevailed over Peace in November at Del Mar to notch the first victory of his career.

Post time for the Bob Lewis is 2:30 PT/5:30 ET. Shivermetimbers breaks from post five and will be piloted by Rafael Bejarano for the first time.

Five West Point Partners join Nancy Dollase at the races on Saturday and hopefully watch their colt springboard to the Santa Anita Derby, one of the most influential Kentucky Derby preps in recent years.
