Winning Impression Works Well, All Set for Kentucky Derby 146 / Friday, August 28, 2020

Winning Impression will be a big price on the tote board for the Kentucky Derby 146 but his last test could not have gone much better this morning when he worked a strong five furlongs beneath the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs.

The Paynter gelding will be entered Tuesday for the Run for the Roses, which is belated this year but just as special as the zenith of our sport.

Winning Impression, an $87,000 2-year-old purchase last April at OBS, seems to take his training up a notch at Dallas Stewart’s Churchill base. This morning, he put up a fast time but did it the right way, settling in under a snug hold early, finishing up strongly and clocking five furlongs in 59 2/5 with internal fractions of 34 3/5 and 47 and galloping out six furlongs in 1:12 3/5.

West Point’s Jeff Lifson was on hand and issued this report to Winning Impression’s Partners: “Tight hold, big finish. We are prepared. Lord knows we’ll be reminded he’s a big long shot in the coming week. Tune it out. This is what you want to look like coming in to the greatest horse race. Now … we run for the roses.”
