Fresh off a dominant victory in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes, Counting Stars will look to capture another prestigious Grade 1 on Saturday when she takes on the nation’s top 3-year-old fillies in the $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

The daughter of Honor A.P. stamped herself among the nation’s elite sophomore fillies with a commanding 3 3/4-length victory in the Acorn over the same 1 1/8-mile distance she’ll face again this weekend. It was a statement performance that avenged her game third-place finish behind Always a Runner in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), setting the stage for a highly anticipated rubber match between the division’s top two fillies.

Saturday’s Coaching Club American Oaks is one of the oldest and most prestigious races for 3-year-old fillies in North America. The Grade 1 test has been won by champions including Ruffian, Open Mind, Sky Beauty, Ashado, Songbird, Monomoy Girl, Thorpedo Anna, and Idiomatic, and has long served as one of the premier midsummer tests for the division’s elite.

Champion jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who guided Counting Stars to her breakthrough Acorn victory, has the return call aboard the talented filly.

“I think she’s better than ever,” trainer Mark Casse said. “I expect her to run an even bigger one.”

Counting Stars enters the Coaching Club American Oaks in career-best form. After capturing the Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park this spring, she finished a determined third in the Kentucky Oaks before taking a major step forward in the Acorn, where she drew away powerfully in the stretch to earn her first Grade 1 victory.

The Coaching Club American Oaks is scheduled as Race 10 at Saratoga on Saturday with an approximate post time of 5:45 p.m. ET (4:45 p.m. CT). The race will be televised live on FS2 as part of Saratoga Live and streamed live on the NYRA YouTube channel.
