West Point jump-started the yearling sales schedule with three additions at a record-breaking Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select auction.
We managed to land the first horse on our shortlist, a Practical Joke filly to be trained by Christophe Clement.
This is the same sale where West Point latched onto the top-ranked horse in training, Flightline, as well as multiple Graded stakes winner First Captain, in 2019. There were some clear parallels in 2022. Three years ago, Flightline was the Monday session-topper, coming from the Lane’s End consignment on behalf of breeder Summer Wind Farm. West Point and Woodford Racing went back to the same well with Monday’s session-topper, a colt by Uncle Mo, bred by Summer Wind and consigned by Lane’s End.
In 2019, First Captain was a standout in the Tuesday session and wound up topping the whole sale. This year on Tuesday, West Point and Woodford Racing again teamed up and, along with 3C Racing, secured First Captain’s full sister as the highest-priced filly in the entire sale.
Shug McGaughey will train both the Uncle Mo colt and the Curlin filly. Both of them are sold out.
West Point expects to add several yearlings at next week’s Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling sale.
