First Captain takes aim at a second straight historic stakes race on Saturday in the $400,000 Suburban (G2) at Belmont Park. The 4-year-old colt is coming off a determined victory in the Pimlico Special (G3) on May 20 for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey.
The Suburban has been won by a long list of Hall of Famers, including Dr. Fager, Buckpasser, Kelso, Nashua, Easy Goer and Invasor. It was Easy Goer who provided Shug McGaughey with his fourth and most recent Suburban triumph back in 1990. First Captain rallied into a slow pace to prevail in the Pimlico Special by a head.
The last two horses to win the Pimlico Special and Suburban in succession were Invasor in 2005 and Mineshaft in 2003. Both went on to garner the Eclipse Award for champion older male. First Captain, 8-to-5 on the morning-line, is 3-for-3 lifetime at Belmont, including a Grade victory in the Dwyer Stakes almost exactly a year ago.
Also in stakes action for West Point Thoroughbreds on Saturday will be Gal in a Rush (3-1) in the Alywow at Woodbine for trainer Christophe Clement, Cavalry Charge in the Jonathan Schuster at Horseshoe Indianapolis for trainer Dallas Stewart and Got Thunder in the Los Alamitos Derby for trainer John Sadler.
