Maroubra Resurfaces in Arlington’s Grade 3 Modesty Handicap / Thursday, July 11, 2019

French import Maroubra makes a trip to Chicagoland on Saturday for the Grade 3, $150,000 Modesty Handicap on the turf at Arlington Park.

The four-year-old filly will be racing for the third in the United States and in the care of Kentucky-based trainer Cherie DeVaux. Maroubra arrived from Europe last fall, spent the winter in South Florida, and ran well in off the bench at Gulfstream Park in a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes on March 29. Bet down to 9-to-2 odds for the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland on April 26, she struggled to make an impact behind a slow pace and attempting a six-wide rally in the lane, winding up fifth of eight in a race won by the Orchid runner-up, Ickymasho.

Maroubra needed a little extra time after the Bewitch to allow for a sore splint to cool down. Miguel Mena will ride her for the first time on Saturday, starting from post one in a field of nine for the 9 1/2-furlong Modesty. She will carry 115 pounds, four less than the highweight, Simply Breathless, who is stretching out in trip off a pair of stakes victories in California.
