Northern Invader and Stone Silent in Stakes Action Saturday / Saturday, August 12, 2023

Northern Invader made waves with an 8-length maiden win last month and earned a heady step up for his first start against winners, teaming with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez on Saturday in the $500,000 Secretariat Stakes (G2T) at Colonial Downs.

Velazquez was on board for the tour de force at Belmont Park in Northern Invader’s turf debut, which followed strong second-place finishes on dirt in each of the colt’s first two starts.

Cherie DeVaux trains Northern Invader for West Point and her husband, WPT’s bloodstock agent David Ingordo. The white-faced chestnut was acquired at the OBS March sale of two-year-olds in training in 2022.

Also on Saturday, 3-year-old turf sprinter Stone Silent tackles the $150,000 Galway Stakes on the grass at Saratoga. The Adios Charlie filly was a stakes-winning 2-year-old in Southern California and scored by 5 1/2 lengths last time out at Horseshoe Indianapolis for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.

Ricardo Santana Jr. will pilot Stone Silent for the first time in the Galway. Santana and Asmussen won the Grade 3 Troy Stakes last weekend over the same course and distance.
