Soldier Boy Scores by 5 Lengths / Friday, November 1, 2019

Soldier Boy capped a strong Breeders’ Cup lead-in for West Point Thoroughbreds over the weekend, breaking his maiden by 5 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita on Saturday. The victory came after Hard Not to Love captured the Friday feature at Santa Anita and Giza Goddess chipped in a second-place finish in Saturday’s Grade 3 Autumn Miss in her first start of 2019.

Soldier Boy left his competition behind in Saturday’s nightcap, setting the pace under jockey Tyler Baze and opening up powerfully at the top of the stretch to prevail easily as an odds-on favorite. He had just missed winning his previous start on September 28, losing the head bob at the wire to Justinian.

“I’m just so happy to see this horse run like that,” trainer John Sadler said. “He has really come a long way.”

Tyler Baze said, “I got to work him last week and I begged John to ride him today. He is some kind of special thing.

“He has a high cruising speed and I can see him going anywhere from 6 1/2 to a mile, mile and a sixteenth.”
