Desbordes on Sunday secured her fourth win of 2020, hanging on gamely to score by a head at Laurel Park.
Trained by George Weaver, the 3-year-old filly prevailed despite giving up the lead along the backstretch. She was content to track to the outside of Complete Surprise before answering jockey Victor Carrasco’s call turning for home and moving back to the front. She led by about a length past the eighth pole and held off a last-gasp bid from Ortinolo.
Victor said, “Man she got out there and was comfortable. I was watching her ears and they were up, so I let her go as she wished. I wasn’t sure what would happen when that other filly grabbed the lead, but she (Debordes) was game and happy to just sit off of her. At the five-sixteenths pole, I said, ‘Momma it’s time to go,’ and she responded for me.”
