Bill Mott has scaled the heights of Thoroughbred racing over more than four decades, from training the legendary Cigar to becoming the youngest trainer ever inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame, and from winning the Kentucky Derby to capturing 15 Breeders’ Cup victories.
Mott has earned the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Trainer five times (1995, 1996, 2011, 2023, and 2025). In 2023, he delivered one of the sport’s most memorable seasons, notching three Breeders’ Cup wins, highlighted by the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile with eventual Horse of the Year Cody’s Wish. His excellence continued in 2025 with Sovereignty, who was honored as Horse of the Year.
A dominant presence at America’s premier racetracks, Mott has won nine training titles at Saratoga, 10 at Belmont Park, nine at Gulfstream Park, and five at Keeneland. For many years, he stood as the all-time winningest trainer at Churchill Downs, where he also set the record for most victories at a single meet—54 wins during the 1984 Spring Meet.
Mott maintains year-round racing operations in Louisville and New York, with a South Florida base during the winter months.
